Kelpies were created by crossing early Collies with other herding dogs and possibly Dingoes. Another famous early Kelpie was a red male named John Quinns Red Cloud. Many other red and red and tan Kelpies were named after him including a Western Australian dog that became quite famous.
It is now common to refer to all red and red and tan Kelpies especially ones with white chests as Red Cloud Kelpies. The lithe hard-muscled Australian Kelpie can work stock for many hours and cover long distances in heat and dust without giving in. One of the smartest of all breeds the Australian Kelpie can also be one of the most challenging to live with.
